A Timeline of an HPV Infection: What Happens After Exposure?

Following exposure to HPV, the virus enters the body, typically through microscopic abrasions in the skin or mucous membranes. This marks the beginning of the incubation period, during which the virus is present but may not be detectable by tests and usually causes no symptoms. This silent phase can last from a few weeks to several months, and in some cases, even years. It is important to understand that during this time, you may not know you have been infected.

In the majority of cases, the body’s immune system recognizes HPV as an intruder and mounts an effective defense. For about 90% of individuals, the immune system will naturally clear the virus within two years of infection. This process is often silent, with the individual never developing any related health problems. A healthy immune system is your first and best line of defense against HPV.

There are over 200 types of HPV, categorized as either low-risk or high-risk.

• Low-Risk HPV: Strains like HPV 6 and 11 are the primary cause of genital warts. If symptoms are to develop, they typically appear within a few months of exposure, but can also take longer. These warts are treatable and are not linked to cancer.
• High-Risk HPV: Strains such as HPV 16 and 18 are of greater concern as they can lead to cancer. However, it is crucial to understand that a persistent infection with a high-risk HPV strain is necessary for this to occur. The progression from initial infection to the development of pre-cancerous cells and potentially cancer is a slow process that can take 10 to 20 years, or even longer.

For those concerned about a recent exposure, it’s natural to want to get tested immediately. However, due to the incubation period, testing too soon may not yield an accurate result. HPV DNA tests, which are highly accurate at detecting the presence of the virus, can typically identify an infection from three weeks to a few months after exposure.

In a small percentage of cases, the immune system does not clear the HPV infection, leading to a persistent infection. It is this persistence of high-risk HPV that is the primary risk factor for developing HPV-related cancers, most notably cervical cancer. Other, less common cancers associated with persistent high-risk HPV include cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and oropharynx (back of the throat).

Regular health check-ups and screenings are vital for early detection of any cellular changes caused by persistent high-risk HPV. For women, regular Pap tests and HPV tests are essential for cervical cancer prevention.

If you are diagnosed with HPV, it is likely that your partner has also been exposed. It is advisable for your partner to also undergo a health check-up and discuss their potential risk with a healthcare provider.
