Reading Your Report: The Two Key Parts

Your urine culture report from Medpro Laboratory Clinic will be clear and concise, but it’s helpful to understand the main components. The results are typically divided into two sections: Bacterial Identification & Count and Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing (AST).

Part 1: Identifying the Culprit (Bacterial Identification)

This section tells you if bacteria were found and how much is present.

Colony Count (CFU/mL): This is the measure of the concentration of bacteria in your urine. “CFU/mL” stands for Colony-Forming Units per Milliliter. Think of it as a population census for the bacteria.
- No Growth or <10,000 CFU/mL: This typically means there is no infection. A low count may also indicate that the sample was contaminated during collection (e.g., by skin bacteria) rather than representing a true infection.
- 10,000 to 100,000 CFU/mL: This is a borderline result. Your doctor will consider this along with your symptoms to determine if treatment is needed.
- >100,000 CFU/mL: This is considered a “significant” result and is a strong indicator of a UTI.
Bacterial Species Identified: If significant growth is found, the lab will identify the specific type of bacteria. The most common culprit in UTIs is Escherichia coli (E. coli), which accounts for over 80% of cases. Other bacteria like Klebsiella, Proteus, or Staphylococcus can also be responsible. Knowing the exact species is the first step to targeted treatment.

Part 2: Finding the Right Weapon (Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing – AST)

Example Scenario:

Your report might say:

Growth: >100,000 CFU/mL
Organism: Escherichia coli
Antibiotic Sensitivity:
- Ciprofloxacin: R
- Nitrofurantoin: S
- Trimethoprim/Sulfa: R

Interpretation: You have a significant UTI caused by E. coli. The bacteria are resistant to Ciprofloxacin and Trimethoprim/Sulfa, but susceptible to Nitrofurantoin. Your doctor will prescribe Nitrofurantoin for effective treatment.
